Project Space • Contemporary Lao Art Centre
Project Space is the first Centre for Contemporary Lao Art, situated in the Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden in Luang Prabang. Our permanent collection concentrates on young artists from a new generation, that stand out in their visions of what Lao Contemporary Art can be, artists that have something to say for themselves, and whose work is of international quality. We work closely together with them long-time, discuss, coach, and follow their work to provide support where we can and collect their work in-depth. Workshops, Masterclasses, Residencies and Research Projects complement our Collections and Thematic Multidisciplinary Exhibitions Programs.
At Project Space we consider that we cannot look at Lao and SE Asian art in general from a western point of view, we must take into account cultural, historical and religious background and sensitivities. I had to take of my western glasses after working in Amsterdam, Paris and New York for over 38 years in different functions in the world of the arts and publishing and measure new bi-focals to forget an euro centric basis and to give the Lao artists the possibility to express themselves, their stories and their works with their own words.
“The dominant mode of expression in Lao art, remains oil painting in a modernist style with a neo-traditional agenda to romanticize Lao cultural heritage. In global art circuits, this type of artwork is deemed passé, reinforcing a perception of Laos as stuck or repressive. This might be a partial explanation for why art of post-socialist Laos is generally overlooked in the field of Asian art history.”

But he last ten years a lot has been changing in Laos, led foremost by actors from the Dance, Theatre and Film worlds and recently there is an acceleration with multiple artist initiatives in the “fine arts”.
We collect and show the works from this new generation of artists within their context and with perspectives that we hope will open windows to be appreciated by an international professional and general public.

Arts don’t exist in a bubble and Culture at its best benefits all of society. Our unique position at Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden opens so many possibilities towards ecological and social issues, that we strongly believe in research and publications to disseminate our work. Our very first project was the study in 2022: “Women in Lao Contemporary Art & Culture from 1975 till Now”. Building further on this we try to support better access for women, people with disabilities and people from local minorities. A collaboration with “Proud to be us Laos” wants to create a safe place for people from the LGBTI communities to gather and express themselves at Pha Tad Ke and to organize regional encounters.
