Beasts On The Moon Theatre Company
When inspiration strikes, it’s like a sign from your heart – difficult to ignore. When 18 year old Thiane Khamvongsa found herself enraptured by Richard Kalinoski’s 1992 play, “Beast On The Moon”, the direction of her life was dramatically impacted. The play struck Thiane with the realisation that “theatre allows us to name unspeakable things…” Nearly a decade later, Thiane gives tribute to this inspiration by borrowing the play’s title to christen her own theatre company.
Founded in 2009 by Thiane Khamvongsa, Beasts On The Moon (Les Bêtes sur la Lune) is a magical theatre company that was born from an inspiration, and propelled with a desire to become the inspiration itself. The first creation by Beasts On The Moon, “Au Revoir Pays”, won the Paris Young Talent prize in 2010. In 2013, Thiane said goodbye to France and resettled back to her origins in Laos. The French-raised and educated director and playwright, formed a friendship with puppeteers Khao Niew and the dynamic dancers of Fanglao and to this day, continue to collaborate on projects.
Thiane is quoted saying that she wanted to create a company that gives “… a space of freedom where we would create pieces that finally tell our stories! It will become, I hope, a place of contemporary creation where the boundaries between the different performing arts (theatre, dance, music, visual arts, etc.) are increasingly blurred, where we support each other, and where we mix arts and stories from all over the world.”
