A coming of age story presented in the style of found footage, Memoir is an intimate recording of five friends on their final day together as students in highschool.
Director, Wravong Phrachanh, wanted to “share this feeling of what it is like for us at this stage in our life.” The self-funded, low-budget film was shot in one day with four of her classmates. The team did not have a camera so most of the filming was done on Wravong’s iPhone.
Memoir won second prize at the 2020 LanXang Shorts in Vientiane, Wravong and her team’s first ever film award.
Filmmaker’s Profile: Wravong Phrachanh (1998)
The oldest of three girls, Wravong Phrachanh (Noknoy) was born in Vientiane. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Animation at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Vientiane. She is a freelance filmmaker, sketch artist, and animator and has participated in workshops in Japan, China, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Wravong credits her interest in movie making to the Korean zombie film Train to Busan (2016). Before it, she was only familiar with western zombie movies. Somehow, watching her first Asian zombie movie made her realise she wanted to make films.
In her spare time, Wravong loves doodling and writing. One day, when she is ready, she aspires to make a feature film. In 2022, she received a grant from the Lao Filmmakers Fund for an animated short called 49 Hours Left. She is currently working on other short animations and two film scripts…one of them involving zombies.
