Fly Sandy Fly is an unassuming and wistful pondering of friendship, freedom, and rituals turned into commerce. All this when a sparrow goes missing.
The story of this drama arose from an observation by the director: “When I see people buy merit birds to free them, believing that if they free the merit bird, they will get good luck back. The bird shop is never out of birds. I wonder who is doing the wrong thing between the shop owner who is selling the birds, and the people who buy the birds.”
Funded by the Lao Filmmakers Fund and Lao New Wave Cinema, Fly Sandy Fly premiered on the opening night of the 2022 Blue Chair Film Festival in Luang Prabang.
Filmmaker’s Profile: Phanumad Disattha (1982)
Phanumad Disattha (Ton), an only child, was born and raised in Nong Khai Province in Northeastern Thailand, where his parents fled during the Lao civil war. He spent one year as a high school exchange student in Miami and studied hospitality at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island. Phanumad desperately wanted to go to art school in Boston, applied and was accepted, but was unable to fund his tuition. Returning to Thailand, he enrolled in Rangsit University where he completed a BA in Mass Communications with a focus on filmmaking.
At 28 years old, Phanumad decided to return to live in Laos. Consistent with his coffee passion, he opened Baan Ton Mali Cake Cafe. Searching for other filmmakers in Laos, Phanumad found Anysay Keola and Xaisongkham Induangchanthy and with seven others, they formed Lao New Wave Cinema.
Phanumad’s first film project was the Thai feature, Brown Sugar (2010). Preferring to create fictional “stories about friendships and family relationships,” his other works include the privately funded musical comedy, Huk Aum Lum (2013) and the omnibus film Vientiane in Love (2015). A man of many interests, Phanumad enjoys listening to music, playing the guitar, photography, and is currently studying fine arts and sculpting.
