The following is a highlight of notable films, firsts, and debuts for the Lao filmmaking community, in chronological order:
At The Horizon (2011), Anysay Keola pushed the boundaries of censorship with the first Lao crime-thriller movie.
Chanthaly (2013), the first feature film directed by Mattie Do, and the first horror film produced in Laos.
I Want To Be A Solder (2013), a propaganda drama directed by the current Director General of the Department of Cinema, Khamphao Vannavong.
Vientiane in Love (2015), a collection of five love stories set in the capital of Laos, directed by Phanumad Disattha, Xaisongkham Induangchanthy, Anysay Keola, and Vannaphone Sitthirath.
Melody of Bamboo (2016), a poetic short documentary spotlighting the traditional bamboo flute by photographer and emerging filmmaker, Ka Xiong.
LET’s Love (2018), a short story of love and self-identification through the eyes of an LGBTQI young woman; written, directed, and produced by Dorn Bouttasing.
Beyond The Power (2018), a film that showcases the visual effects talents of the Light Flare Team, and was directed by visual effects artist and photographer, Palinya Sayamoungkhoun.
The Blanket (2022), directed by Mitpasa Sitthihukpanya and produced by DNA FILMS, won second prize from the RWI Asia Pacific Award in Bali, Indonesia.
Absence of Sound (2022), the first feature film by Sonepasith Phanphila who has previously made several documentaries including the award-winning short about wildlife trafficking, Children of The Jungle (2019).
The Shadow (2023), the anticipated directorial debut of singer, songwriter, and actor, Soulasath Sounnavong.
The Signal (2023), Lee Phongsavanh’s directorial debut which premiered at the Shanghai Film Festival, where The Hollywood Reporter named it among “5 movies not to miss.”
